DAMIEN

I busied myself going over the financials of Rexford Drugs. The company was in trouble, but it wasn't in dire straits. My best bet to get a good deal was to convince Guy Rexford that Bronson Inc. would be a better fit for his stores than Dupont Holdings.

After all, our main area of competence was grocery, and 65% of his business stemmed from grocery.

Mackenzie moved into my suite and made friends with all the hotel staff and several of the guests. I knew she'd charm Guy Rexford and his wife at dinner tonight.

It'd been three days, and she'd been the perfect companion. Leaving me alone to work, never bothering me, coming whenever I called, and keeping to herself in her room.

I heard the faint sound of Mackenzie strumming on the guitar and singing in her room. She'd do that for hours at a time. It amazed me how self-entertaining she was.

I liked the sound of her singing and the company, but since she'd gotten here, I moped around, getting randomly angry whenever I was alone.

Frustrated, I grabbed my cell phone and dialed my brother Bradley. He was the second oldest, but the wisest. Somehow, he'd steered clear of the family business without being disowned by Dad.

Brad always knew what to do or say. Even with the most difficult people.

"So how's the rat race?" he asked. It's how Brad always answered the phone.

"Great. I won it."

My brother laughed. "Always in a hurry to be King Rat. So what big deal have you closed today?"

"Why are you asking about my deals? What happened? You change your mind and want to work for Dad?" My brother worked for the National Forest Service in fire management. He lived in a cabin in the middle of the Angeles National Forest.

"Never. You always call when you want to do a victory lap."

"Well, we all can't be hippies living in some treehouse," I said.

"Yeah, the hippie life is so me. You should really try it, man."

"So what did you buy, and who did you screw over to get it?" He asked.

"I'm working on a deal to buy some drugstores here in South Florida."

"Was that the thing your assistant, Lauren, told you about? So how did it pan out?"

"Looks like it might, but we'll have to see."

"That Lauren girl is sharp," he said.

"If only she'd heal faster and get back to work."

"You're not the only one who wants her back at the office."

"What do you mean by that?" I asked. I suspected that my brother Aiden might be up to his old tricks again. That guy will never learn.

"Slow your roll, King Rat. It's nothing. So if you didn't close some deal, why did you call me?" I heard the telltale click that my brother was opening up a beer.

"Can't I call to see how my brother's doing out there in the sticks?"

I heard his boots walking across his wooden floor and his porch door swing open and smack closed. "Not in the middle of a workday when you have a big deal on the table.
